About the Royal City, Guelph, ON
Guelph was founded on St. George’s day, April 23, 1827 by John Galt, who named the city in honour of the British Royal family, the Hanoverians who were descendants from the House of Welf. This was the first time the name Guelph had been used for the name of a city honouring the Royal Family. This is why Guelph is referred to as ‘The Royal City’.
